Post doctoral position in scientific computing at Cardiff University

As part of an on-going EPSRC funded collaboration  between the College of Engineering, Swansea University and the School of Mathematics and School of Computer Science and Informatics at Cardiff University a 2-year post-doctoral position is available.

The position will be focused on the application of parallel computing and the use GPUs to accelerate the solution of Maxwell inverse problems for a medical imaging application. The position will be based at School of Computer Science and Informatics at Cardiff University under the supervision of Professor David Walker. The PDRA will also work together with the other grant holders Professors Marco Marletta and Malcolm Brown (Cardiff University), Dr Paul Ledger (Swansea University) and the other PDRAs on the project. For further details and how to apply please see

Open PhD Position

Applications are invited to the Civil and Computational Research Centre, Swansea University, for a PhD in the field of Computational Multiphysics. This project is in collaboration with Siemens Magnet Technology (SMT) and will be funded by an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) case award with an enhanced stipend.

The aim of this PhD is to develop efficient computational analysis tools for the prediction of heat-loads and mechanical vibrations arising from the electromechanical coupling that results during the operation of MRI scanners. The problem is challenging since it involves the coupling of different physics and yet rewarding since its successful completion will lead to the embedding of the developed methodology into the routine magnet design process at Siemens Magnet Technology (SMT).

We particularly welcome applications from candidates with a strong background in computational science and engineering, computational mechanics and or applied mathematics.

For further details please see

To find out more or submit an application please contact either Dr Paul Ledger (p.d.ledger@swansea.ac.uk) or Dr Antonio Gil (a.j.gil@swansea.ac.uk).

Research Officer/ Research Associate Positions

EPSRC funding (U.K.) has recently been awarded for a large collaborative project between the College of Engineering at Swansea University, the School of Computer Science and Informatics and the School of Mathematics both at Cardiff University. The project will investigate the solution of the Maxwell inverse problems for a medical imaging application and will involve several different strands including theoretical analysis, numerical analysis and computational techniques as well as scientific computing. The project is being led by Dr P.D. Ledger (Engineering, Swansea) and Professors Brown (Computer Science, Cardiff), Marletta (Mathematics, Cardiff) and Walker (Computer Science, Cardiff).
At this time, two 2-year post-doctoral research associate/officer positions are available and it is anticipated that a further position will be available next year.
The first is on the theoretical analysis of Maxwell inverse problems and is to be appointed at Cardiff University. For further details on this position and how to apply for this post please see

NEW PROJECT: GENERALISED POLARISATION TENSORS FOR MAXWELL'S EQUATIONS

I have recently been awarded EPSRC funding for a joint project together with Professor Bill Lionheart (School of Mathematics, The University of Manchester) on the development of asymptotic expansions for perturbations in the electromagnetic fields in the Maxwell system due to the presence of small objects, which can be expressed in terms of generalised polarisation tensors. I am looking forward to collaborating with Bill and our other collaborators Professor Ammari (Ecole Polytechnique, Paris, France) and Dr Volkov (Worcester Polytechnic Institute, USA) on this new exciting project.

New Project: Inverse Maxwell Problems for Magnetic Induction Tomography

We have recently received EPSRC funding for a joint project together with Professor Malcolm Brown (School of Computer Science, Cardiff University), Professor Marco Marletta (School of Mathematics, Cardiff University) and Professor David Walker (School of Computer Science, Cardiff University) on the computational solution of the Maxwell inverse problem for Magnetic Induction Tomography. As part of this new exciting project postdoctoral positions will shortly be advertised.
